JOB TITLE: Mental Health Clinician

PROGRAM: Cobb Detention Center

FLSA STATUS:  Non-exempt

JOB SUMMARY: The position provides first line mental health screenings and triage for any incarcerated inmates requesting or requiring mental health services in the Cobb Detention Center. The Social workers make a referral to psychiatric services when it is deemed clinically appropriate. Staff skilled in this role will have a trained eye about appropriate referrals in order to optimize the prescriber’s time. These positions help provide a valuable role in the community continuum of care for individuals suffering from a mental illness. Constant communication with staff in other parts of the agency is essential.


  • Triage individuals to determine the level of care they require. ------------20%
  • Assess the needs of individuals and collect history to supplement the psychiatric evaluation. -----20%
  • Respond to calls in the housing units to assist with more urgent mental health needs. --------------10%
  • Documents all individual contacts to insure continuity of information in the electronic medical record. 20%
  • Work closely with medical and security staff to determine safe housing placements --------10%
  • Provide infirmary coverage and formulate safety plans for potentially suicidal individuals. ----- 20%


  • All staff should possess a masters’ degree in social work, psychology or counseling.


  • Triage, screening and assessment competency with a good working understanding of psychopathology.


  • Excellent triage and screening expertise including suicide prevention.


  • Working in a climate controlled environment
  • Dealing with interruptions and changes in work priorities
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional lifting up to 15 lbs.


  • Monthly contacts will exceed hours worked each month or at least one per hour.
  • 90% of contacts reviewed will be in the SOAP format.
  • A prescriber appointment task will be scheduled in the electronic medical record 90% of the time if the individual note states as much.
  • Maintain a chronic care caseload by having a face-to-face contact with each assigned individual at least once every 90 days and charting the visit in the medical record. This should be at a minimum 95% of the time.
  • A chart note will be recorded in the EMR each time that an individual is cleared from close observations 95% of the time.


  1. Education –  Masters’ degree in one of the social services helping professions
  2. Licensure/Certification – Paraprofessionals
  3. Experience – Two (2) years post master’s experience in the mental health field.
  4. Other - Criminal background check clearance, official academic transcripts, valid driver’s license/ID,  drug screen, TB test


  1. Education – Masters’ degree in social work, psychology or counseling.
  2. Licensure/Certification – LCSW or LPC or Psychologist
  3. Experience – 5 years post masters experience
